Harvesters to Go on an Architectural Journey
Wednesday, March 07, 2018, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
The month of March will find the Harvesters on the road again as they travel by chartered motor coach to Lakeland for a visit to the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings on the campus of Florida Southern College (FSC), a United Methodist affiliated institution. The date set for the architectural excursion is Wednesday, March 7.
The architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright on the FSC campus may be a little known Central Florida treasure, but in 2012 the Florida Southern College Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service for being the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world. The campus is home to 10 buildings and two additional structures designed by Wright.
Wright felt most college campuses were architectural failures and wanted the opportunity to design an entire campus from scratch.
Ludd M. Spivey, FSC President during the Great Depression, envisioned a "college of tomorrow" as one part of a plan to build college enrollment which had been hit hard by the Depression. Spivey visited Wright at his Wisconsin home in 1936 and proposed that the world-famous architect design the Methodist college campus. The two men's dreams came together with a handshake, and in 1938 ground was broken for the first building.
Sixty-nine years old when he began his work at FSC, Frank Lloyd Wright was world renown and at the peak of his career having just finished the Johnson Wax building and Falling Waters.
While on campus the Harvesters will have a 2 ½ hour in-depth walking tour led by an experienced docent. The tour will begin inside the Tourism and Education Center with a description of Mr. Wright’s vision for the campus and the unique method of construction he chose for the site. After leaving the Center, the Harvesters will walk across the campus as the docent tells the story of each of the Wright designed structures, including the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, the Danforth Chapel, and the Usonian House. As time permits, the group will also have the opportunity to explore their beauty from within.
Total walking distance for the tour is approximately ¾ mile. Because the buildings are on hillsides, there will be a number of steps to navigate. There will be rest stops and facilities along the tour route.
The motor coach will leave the Harvest parking lot at 9:00 AM in order to reach the FSC campus and have time to prepare for the 10:30 AM tour.
Cost for the day is $45 which includes motor transportation, driver gratuity and the in-depth Frank Lloyd Wright tour. Cost of the trip is non-refundable.
Following the tour, the Harvesters will travel to downtown Lakeland for lunch at Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille (www.hookedonharrys.com) designated by Trip Advisor as the #3 of 366 restaurants in Lakeland. Cost of lunch will be on your own.
Following lunch, the Harvesters will begin our return journey back to Harvest. Return time to Harvest is planned for 4 PM.
